Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced today that New York’s stay-at-home measures, including closing schools, will continue either until or through May 15 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The continued shutdown will be done in coordination with six other states in the Northeast (CT, DE, MA, NJ, PA, RI).

NYSSBA is awaiting an executive order from the governor regarding whether the 180-day state aid waiver will remain in effect and clarifying when schools would be scheduled to reopen.

The prior executive order closed schools through April 29, suggesting the closure will be through Friday, May 15. In that case, schools would reopen the following Monday, May 18, unless otherwise ordered by the governor or other authorities.

During the extended closure, schools will be expected to continue with their plans for child care, meals and distance learning.
